The Hammersmith & Fulham Historic Buildings Group is a voluntary organisation based in the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham.

We work to promote, research, record, preserve and enhance Hammersmith and Fulham’s historic environment. This includes not just historic buildings and built structures of all types, but also open spaces, parks and gardens, landscape and views, the Thames and the Grand Union canal and what planners call the public realm, which means things like signage, street furniture and materials.

We get involved in lots of different activities, including

  • commenting on proposals affecting historic buildings, conservation areas and open spaces
  • appearing at planning enquiries
  • recording and research
  • contributing in detail to the council’s conservation area profiles
  • proposing buildings for statutory listing
  • making representations to the mayor of London and government on policy and legislative matters, including the mayor's London Plan
  • working with other groups on major issues such as the new town hall in Hammersmith, landscape improvements to Bishops Park and Shepherds Bush common, developments at White City and the restoration of Fulham Palace and its grounds

Using our records, research and experience, the HBG works to retain the historic identity of the borough and to ensure that new developments incorporate the old and are also ‘good neighbours’ with it. Continuity with the past and design ‘good manners’ are now recognised as helping create a sense of identity and place, something which is of value in people's lives.

We believe that our work is vital to everybody who lives and works in our borough. If you would like to help us with a gift, a subscription or an offer of practical help, please go to our Join page. We look forward to hearing from you!
